Info Post
By Emma Krasov, photography by Yuri KrasovOzumo Restaurant in San Francisco, known for its endlessly creative and consistently good contemporary Japanese cuisine, brings on a [timely] bargain lunch option, called Winter Ramen.
Wavy ramen noodles submerged in aromatic broth and topped with various meats, sea products, and/or veggies, keep you warm on a windy day, and satisfied at least until the happy hour with this filling meal in a bowl.Ozumo Ramen has braised pork belly, snow crab legs pieces, slices of white fish cake with pink swirls, scallions, and steamed bamboo shots neatly arranged around a soft-boiled egg in a shoyu stock.Kimuchi Ramen, Executive Chef Alex Morgan’s “favorite,” is composed of pork shoulder and house-made kimuchi in tonkotsu stock, with fragile needles of dark-red chili shavings on top. Not too spicy, but with a definite kick, it’s an energizing little combo.
There are three more ramen bowls on the menu (Spicy Miso, with chicken, poached egg and cabbage; Kaisen, with snow crab and prawns in a lobster stock; Vegetarian, with mixed vegetables and pickled ginger) and a cold soba one – Cha-Soba, with marinated tuna, seaweed, and wasabi vinaigrette over green tea noodles.
All ramen bowls include green onions, bean sprouts, fish cake, and bamboo shoots, and are preceded by a side of steamed edamame pods.Winter Ramen lunch is only served in the stylish Ozumo sake lounge at the front of the restaurant, however, sushi, and additional menu items can be ordered here, too.The Ozumo sake list includes over 90 brands, and the full bar serves signature cocktails, wine, and Sapporo and Kirin beer on tap.
