At the newly opened Francis Ford Coppola Winery in Geyserville, where wine tasting reaches a new high and becomes a “day adventure,” even Count Dracula himself would have abandoned his penchant for “other reds” and try some sparkling Sofia Blanc de Blancs 2009 from Monterey County, one or three of the Director’s Cut special wines, or a full-bodied fragrant Archimedes created in-house by the Director of Winemaking Corey Beck. At the press opening on the first day of September, a group of Bay Area journalists had a great chance to experience them all, plus a scrumptious dinner, served at Rustic Restaurant on premises.Chef Nick Petrilli presented some of Francis’s Favorites from the menu, like Pizza Funghi e Salsiccia with wild mushrooms and Italian sausage, and Bumbola (bumble bee-shaped) pasta with deliciously bitter broccoli rabe. Pomegranate marinated rack of lamb was at its utmost tenderness, and quite possibly the most delicious piece of meat ever to be paired with red fruit and spices-rich Archimedes, named after the great Greek as well as the street address of the facility.Located on a secluded side road Via Archimedes, the new winery boasts state-of-the-art production floor and cellars, an attractive tasting room with a view, and a full-fledged museum dedicated to Coppola’s filmmaking, in the main building. The surrounding grounds hold a luscious garden, a swimming pool, and a performing arts center with an open stage, all merging with an open space around, neatly combed by vineyards and framed by Sonoma forests nearby. The proposed “day adventure” is intended for families with children as well as for couples, groups, and companies – there is something for everyone here, in Coppola’s estate, created like an intriguing movie set by one of the most distinguished contemporary filmmakers. Francis Ford Coppola Winery is located at 300 Via Archimedes, Geyserville, California. More information at: www.FrancisCoppolaWinery.com
