What is it about the wines of Australia that is catching the attention of trade and media in wine-enriched San Francisco?
An in-depth look at the ‘Next Chapter’ for Australian wines was offered recently by a team of Down Under winemakers and distributors visiting their second-best (after UK) export market.
A detailed showcase of today’s new vintages, vintage variations, and regional expressions, as well as recognized Australian classics emphasized the many wondrous wines coming mostly from South Eastern and South Australia regions.
Concentrating on the current styles and trends, in 2013 Australian wine industry pursues diversity (from popular to luxury prices); boutique and eclectic offerings; regional; new wines from established brands; healthier (low alcohol), sweet, and sparkling varieties.
Between the oversold seminars, blind tasting challenge, and just trade tasting that unfolded in the spacious sea theme decorated rooms of San Francisco’s landmark – Farallon Restaurant – it was not easy to select a winner, or even a troop of winners, but there were some very special wines that caught my attention.
Zibibbo sparkling pink moscato is one of the beautiful South Australia wines, with only 8% alcohol, light and vibrant with summer strawberry flavor.
Mrs. Wigley Rose Grenache from McLaren Vale region in the Adelaide Super Zone is an unusually color-saturated young and fresh rose with a perfumed bouquet of red cherries, raspberries, strawberries and cream, with a hint of rose petals and sweet spice.
Paringa Sparkling Shiraz from Riverland, South Australia, is a looker with deep magenta color, crisp clean raspberry and blueberry fruit, and velvety tannins.
As of today, three-quarters of Australian wine exports to the US are Chardonnay, Shiraz, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, and Pinot Gris. However, the diversity is expected to increase as the new chapter for new wines is well and truly underway. More information at: www.wineaustralia.com
