A film to end all visual-effects films, James Cameron’s Avatar is now playing everywhere, equally fascinating audiences of all levels of education and all ages. Conceived 14 years ago by the “king of the world,” as the director of Titanic famously called himself, the film was hard to produce simply because the necessary technology did not yet exist. Now, an amazing 3D experience is beyond belief spectacular and captivating. The only thing that’s not working, as is often the case with mega blockbusters, is the story. After evil earthlings who tried to rob gentle giants of the planet Pandora of their $1mil a kilo minerals are expelled back to Earth, some nagging questions remain. Indigenous pandorans are hunter-gatherer society, lead by a chief and his wife, a shaman (shawoman). They drink water from flower cups and hunt animals to who they apologize for the killing. So, what future holds for them? As starvation is an inherent part of indigenous living, would they betray their ideal relationship with Mother Nature and start technologically developing land for crops, or would they implement severe birth control? Knowing they sit on an immense treasure (the abovementioned minerals) wouldn’t they try to trade with Earth to feed their hungry, get some TVs and BMWs, and move to Beverly Hills altogether? How long will it take for an aborigine to realize that a machine gun he is holding in the last episode of the film to chase away earthlings can get him all he needs without actually trying? Don’t want to sound like a party pooper here, just remember to suspend your disbelief and your fatigue of negative white-male stereotypes, and then you can tremendously enjoy the show.
