In the rich history of French cinema, only a few films are as memorable and poignant as The Chorus (Les Choristes, 2004), which was nominated for 8 Cesar Awards and won two. The man behind the film, director Christophe Barratier now came up with another masterpiece, Paris 36 (Faubourg 36), for which he also wrote a screenplay. Naïve and profound, simple and beautiful, the film is, characteristically for the creator, deeply humane. The cast, led by Gerard Jugnot (Pigoil), Clovis Cornillac (Milou), Kad Merad (Jacky), and Nora Arnezeder (Douce) brings to life some extraordinary characters who live, struggle, and fight for their dreams during the 1930s financial crisis and unemployment, and in the long foreshadows of the upcoming catastrophe of WWII. An outstanding child actor Maxence Perrin (Jojo) shares the screen with his adult colleagues as their talented equal. Composer Reinhardt Wagner and lyricist Frank Thomas created the original songs for the film in the style of popular tunes of 1936. Tom Stern’s beautiful cinematography presents long shots of Parisian neighborhoods where the story of love, friendship, and perseverance unfolds in an enticing tempo.
