In preparation for the largest celebration of its kind in the nation – the San Francisco Symphony Black and White Ball, Chairwoman Patricia Sprincin announced at the launch event at the Bently Reserve last Monday that she left it up to the general public and potential attendees to decide which one of the three proposed ball gowns designed by Colleen Quen she’d be wearing on May 22.

Online vote will also name the official B&W Bite, catered by McCall Associates, and a DJ for the main stage. The beloved Bay Area ball, started back in the mid-20th century to mark the 50th anniversary of the Big Quake, grew high and wide over the years, and became enormously popular in 2008 when Sprincin took the lead.

Produced by the event designer Robert Fountain, It now includes so many different parties, music venues, dance floors, and culinary festivities, that SF Symphony lovers and supporters will be hard pressed to choose some over others or risk getting overwhelmed with this embarrassment of riches. A truncated list of the indulgencies includes live music and dancing in six venues: Davies Symphony Hall, Grove Street Pavilion, War Memorial Opera House, Veterans Building, and Van Ness Avenue; a concert with Grammy-winning Tony Bennett and k. d. lang; an array of bands – Kool & The Gang, Faith Evans, Tiempo Libre, Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra, Moonalice, Royal Crown Revue, Candela, Papa Doo Run Run, Foreverlan: A Musical Tribute to Michael Jackson, and Zepparella; midnight surprise on Van Ness; Symphony Supper Club with its own entertainment; party bands, food stations and bars; pre-concert reception and post-concert bash, and Patrons’ Dinner in Tented Pavilion.

The giant fundraiser will benefit SF Symphony’s music education program for elementary schools, Adventures in Music (AIM). Since 1988, AIM provides city schools with a music curriculum and teachers’ training; instruments, books, CDs, and other supplementary resources; and allows each student grades 1 through 5 attend in-school ensemble presentations, and a private Symphony concert at Davies Symphony Hall.
